Baseball... America’s pastime, many people dream of playing baseball in America and few make it to the majors. The book â€Å"The Natural† by Bernard Malamud followed the story of Roy Hobbs, a man who just wanted to play baseball. That was Roy Hobbs’ dream, to be the greatest ball player ever. Roy was drafted into baseball and started on the New York Knights. He played his first year and was the greatest ball player in his league, but his choices, jealousy, cockiness, and greed impacted his career. Everybody looked up to and loved Roy because he saved the New York Knights and made them a first place team after years of disappointment. The fame was unreal and he could not believe how his life is going. He started reading the media more often and†¦show more content†¦Bump was pronounced dead at the hospital and Memo was very upset and she blamed Roy for his death because he tried so hard to break them up. After the game ended he went over to Memo to apolog ize for her loss and everything he did before then. The quote â€Å"Taking her arm he said â€Å"Memo, I don t know what more I can do to show you how sorry I am about those times and tell you how I feel in my heart for you.† But Memo stared at him through a veil of tears and said â€Å"I am strictly a dead man s girl† shows how Roy went to apologize to Memo, but he also tried to get her to have feelings for him in her time of grief. The next day Roy was playing in his game and he had an amazing day going 4-4 with a homerun and a double. Later that day he attended Bumps funeral and then Memo came over to Roy and said â€Å"Bump was coming up for a day just before he died.† He felt his anger rise in his heart and asked coldly. â€Å"Well, Memo, What did he have that I don t got?† This upset Memo but also made her think about Roy. At night in Memo and Roy s hotel, Memo was upset about Bump and accidently got into bed with Roy â€Å"When she got into bed w ith him he almost cried out in pain as her icy hands and feet, in immediate embrace, slashed his hot body, but there among the apples, grapes, and melons he found what he wanted and had it.† That quote shows that Roy did not stop Memo when she got into bed with him because he was willing to do anything to get with her. (Hetherington 2009, p. 32) Even though this was observed over a hundred years ago, it can still be seen today with people showing off their cars, holidays and luxury household items such as televisions and computer games consoles. Upbringing and education can also influence our decisions, as can income and the way goods are advertised. We as a Consumer Society are very seduced by the power of advertisement. If goods or leisure services are advertised in the right way out attention is caught and the advertising agencies know this. The use of someone famous promoting the latest perfume or sporting equipment seems to work, and we as consumers tend to rush out to buy the latest fashionable items on offer. We are led to believe that we create the lifestyle that matches our identity. Consumer Society does offer people choice, however not everybody has the same choice. Not everybody is able to consume in the same way, some of us have low paid jobs or simply no interest in being caught up in the game. The Consumer Society of today is very much a Divided Society. This is properly due to restrictions between the elderly and the young, the employed and unemployed. The unemployed are not able to consume in the same way as those with high paid jobs, the elderly and those without cars will not be able to visit the large Retail Parks. Much of this comes down to Zygmunt Bauman’s 1988 theory of the Seduced and the Repressed. Bauman divides Consumer Society into two categories, the Seduced who are able to consume effectively as they have the means and the social circumstances are in their favour and the Repressed who unfortunately are not in the position to consume as the Seduced do, due it be to lack of money, physical or mobility difficulties. Due to this, a group of friends might exclude a young man without a job from going out night clubbing with them. The choices we have about where we shop are sometimes influenced by some of the big Supermarkets. The big Supermarkets and Retail Parks always seem to be full. Whether people like or dislike doing their weekly routine shop, most people will choose to shop there as they offer a wide range of goods at low prices, and they are perceived by most to be a safe and convenient way of shopping compared to the often overpriced High Street. Supermarkets have grown in power and size in the past forty years and they influence our choices in relation to what and where we buy. Some would say that Tesco hold the Monopoly in the UK; they now have over 2000 stores nationwide and are increasing their market share. Around a third of the UK’s grocery shopping is done at Tesco’s. Asda, Sainsbury’s and Morrison’s closely follow behind. Most our shopping is usually done in one of these big four, which means, shoppers do not really have that much choice over where to shop, as all four sell the same products at more or less the same price, so it is more of a personal choice over which one of the big four we choose rather than the choices they offer us. There are many arguments for and against Supermarkets, some people will choose not to shop there, for reasons such as they disagree with what they represent. These tend to be green-minded people who care more about the environment, so they choose to shop at their local organic street markets and support their local farmers. These type of people portray a different message about who they are compared with someone buying the same less expensive goods from one of the big Supermarkets. Many shun Supermarkets as some feel that they offer cheep prices at the expense of vulnerable workers at home and abroad. Whilst others argue that it is better that these people have a job rather than no job at all. Either way the debate between the two is still on going. Polls taken show that employment has been growing about 2 percent a year since 1993-94. Then exactly how does the unemployment rate drop so much within a short period of time? Critics believe that consumer co nfidence has increased a sizable amount and they are becoming more picky. Business week stated that The picture does not get any better than this (Kortez, 1997, P.32). The United States has fought each type of fought unemployment differently. There are several steps that can be taken to achieve low unemployment once again. These steps are also known as the fiscal point and the monetary policy. Fiscal point occurs when taxing and spending are used to regulate economic activity. In turn, this creates the economy to surge and forces the economy into an expansion phase. On the other hand, monetary policies include government policies that have had a great effect on the interest rates. This also affects the quantity of the money within circulation. According to the SIRS Researcher, Some people believe the government must become the employer of last resort if an industry cannot use the nations total labor force (Zycher, 1995, P.46). Eventhough many of the European countries have this policy, The United States has not bothered to pay any attention to it.
